Let me start at the beginning...
This is our back patio......
So we had to get rid of the carpet....
As years went by and I finally decided that I wanted a bigger block , my Dad poured more concrete. Hence all the seams that do not look so good...
So I decided that this is what I would try but put my own spin on it....
I bought Valspar Satin Latex Porch and Floor paint in a brick Red color from Lowe's for $25 a gallon.
And a pack of 2 sponges from the Dollar Tree. I cut one sponge in half.......
I let the natural concrete serve as the "grout" between the "bricks".....
and this is the pattern that I came up with.....
And this is the first part finished.....
I certainly was!!!!
I remembered that my Dad and I wrote all 4 of my family's names ( Debbie, Joe, Jimmy and Joey) in the concrete on one of the blocks.
But I did not know that my Dad had placed a penny, a nickel, a dime and a quarter in the concrete while it was drying in the the far corner of the patio in a symbolic jesture that we would always have money and never have to want for it!!
It brought tears to my eyes remembering all the work my Dad did here for me in this home.
But as I do all these projects, I know he is looking down at me with that tear in his eye that he always had when he was proud of something I did and saying " That a girl!"
I am a Carpenter's Daughter and my Dad never discouraged me from doing things that were usually reserved for Boys!!
I am forever grateful to him for that and I have missed him every day for the last 25 years......
He would be thrilled with how the patio now looks....
The plants in my pots are doing well...
I refinished 2 end tables in my Den along with a few other things.....

Your patio turned out just beautifully! It certainly does hide the different portions of concrete!
Great Job!
Jan ♥
How fabulous are those bricks!!!! It's absolutely gorgeous. What an amazing transformation. We use sponges, gray paint and black tarp at Halloween to create "haunted brick walls" for our garage walls. What a fitting tribute for your father.
PS. My patriotic tree is on the blog today. Hugs!
Oh, my! What a change this made. Aren't you glad you did it ... very nice, Deb.
Have a fabulous day ~

Debbie- You did an absolutely wonderful job on that patio. That brick looks awesome. It made me tear up a bit when you talked about your dad. My own Dad has been gone for 40 years and I still think about him just about every day...and miss him. Blessings to you- I'll let you kno when I need some "brick work" done!;>) xo Diana
Thank you so much for posting this. I can't wait to try it!
How cute it is. Great idea you had.
What a clever idea, and I love that it is an affordable option for changing out the look of plain concrete--I really like this. Well done--it looks beautiful!
This is very creative. You did a great job! I saw this and The Thrifty Groove.

Looks like a great place to relax at the end of the day. What a sweet thing your Dad did with the coins. Carol

Your patio looks amazing. What a fabulous job you did. It looks so real and adds such a finishing touch to all your pretty outdoor decor. I know the hard work involved, but like you said, so worth it.
Now you deserve to rest and sit back and enjoy it.

Oh my goodness this is one of the best projects I have seen all season! Excellent job DEbbie! I wondered how you were able to pull this off! I know it would kill my back too!
xo Olivia
Love the faux brick! It turned out wonderfully! You have a lovely back porch with all those gorgeous flowers and such. :)
Debbie, you've really outdone yourself this time! LOVE the new look to your patio. I'm sure it was backbreaking and time consuming, but oh so well worth it! You will smile everytime you step outside now! So sweet to hear you speak about your father, too. I miss mine terribly. Hope you are having a great weekend!
Big TX Hugs,
Stephanie

Hi Debbie!
This is so nice looking. It looks like real bricks! I think you did a fantastic job.
We have a concrete porch on one side of our house...it faces south...it is the only porch that is concrete. I've seen something like this before and have always thought of doing it. Seeing you did it broken up in a couple of sessions--gives me hope that even with my arthritis...I CAN DO IT!
I'm going to give it a try.
If I get it posted I'll let you know.
leaving here inspired, Pat
So worth it Debbie! Fantastic job there my friend! Your hard work and aching back and knees certainly paid off. thanks for sharing..and enjoy!
Great job Debbie! I am going to give this project a try on an old concrete walkway I have in my backyard.

Mary Alice
Your patio looks great! I love it when a project turns out well and makes such a big difference! Enjoy:@)
I was touched by the story about your father. Your porch looks absolutely amazing and I'm sure you made your dad proud.
Love the new brick look on your patio Debbie! It really pulls everything together so nicely - the sidewalks and all. Your yard just looks wonderful! It has been so hot here in CO- so unusual but it has not helped my yard at all.
I love it and the coziness of it. Plus what a nice tribute to your dad.
Your new "brick" patio looks fantastic! It really finishes off the whole space and is so colorful. Stopping by from Between Naps On The Porch.
great job!!! love the new look!!!!
Debbie!! That is such an amazing transformation!! Well done! Hope you back and knees are feeling better. Thank you for sharing this at my Make it Pretty Monday link party at The Dedicated House. Hope to see you next week. Toodles, Kathryn @TheDedicatedHouse
You did a great job on this Debbie! It turned out wonderful!
WOW! Wonderful transformation! Love your brick! Hugs and blessings, Cindy
Cool!
Debbie: Just came over from BNOTP and love your brickwork. I did the same with a slightly different technique and added a painted "rug" to accent the main piece of furniture. Stop by and check it out. I used patio Paint from Michaels & it has held up for over 10 years even where the rain hits it. Stop by & take a peek: http://theoldefarmhouse.blogspot.com
Thanks for sharing. Joy
This is absolutely amazing! I LOOOVE it! you have the cutest, quaint, home/garden I have seen yet.
I love your blog. thank you so much for sharing this, as it has truly inspired me!

It looks amazing! I have always seen this with a roller...sponges are such a great idea!!!
Oh...my this is a transformation! I love the way it looks. Such an inspiration to others to do something similar on their own plain concrete. I was so touched to read that your father had pushed the coins into the concrete when he'd poured it all those years ago. It brought tears to my eyes remembering all the wonderful things my own father did for me. My own father never saw my little home. If he had...he probably would have told me not to get it for all the projects there for him to do. ha! No, he would have loved it. And like you my father taught me to do big projects. I remember how happy he was the first time I changed out a light fixture on my own. Mine has been gone 10 years in August and I so miss him as you do your's.
Wow Debbie, You did a fantastic job and your dad would be so proud of you. I can't believe what a difference that made on your patio. You're so creative!
Thanks for sharing on Simple & Sweet Fridays.

Congratulations for a marvelous artistic job on that floor. I am sure your dad is really so happy and proud to be your father. I am also studying now the details of how you did it, i might try it too. thanks.
Hi Debbie!
That looks fantastic! You did a really great job of camouflaging those 'seams' in the cement. It really brightens up the whole patio.
I did something similar years ago at a previous house. You can take a look here: http://bunnyjeansdecorandmore.blogspot.com/2011/08/potting-shed-with-faux-brick-floor.html

You know I put in a brick sidewalk 2 summers ago, and I think I like your idea better! It really looks great!
And I too am a daughter of a carpenter... and I'm putting pine floors in my 'bonus' room... and I know my dad is watching me and laughing his arse off.

It's wonderful, Debbie! Talk about adding charm! I would love to do my whole driveway like this, to make it look like those expensive pavers!
xo, Andrea
Really great idea! I love how it came out! Charming!
Thanks for linking up!
Stacey of Embracing Change
Charming!
Wow!!! That is amazing looking! It looks absolutely like real brick! I saw a "brick" stenciled floor once at someone's house, but they had an actual stencil and it seemed like such a huge pain in the butt the way that she did it....your way is sooooo much easier! And looks excellent!!!!
Oh my gosh Debbie the patio is awesome. Been forever since I have been able to get into the blogs and I can see I have lots to catch up on here.
Am back to working 5 days a week for a few months and with the outdoor projects going I am busy all the time it seems. Will be glad when fall arrives and I go back to just on call so I can have more time to myself.
Bet your dad is smiling down while watching you do all your projects around the house.
I will have to e-mail and tell you all the exciting news about my dad. He is doing so much better now than the first year after losing mom.
Again great job on your patio. Hope you are keeping cool. Michigan very hot and humid. Happy 4th to you.
Hello Debbie - you did a fantastic job! It looks great! I do appreciate you sharing with Home and Garden Thursday,

Your patio looks fabulous, Debbie! GREAT job!!!!!

Debbie this is such a wonderful transformation! It would have taken me the whole hour the paint was drying to get my knees to straighten out after doing all that!

I loved reading your post about your concrete "brick" and your dad's touch to it with the coins and the names of your family. Your brick concrete gave me an idea for my kitchen concrete floor of the little fixer-upper my hubby and I purchased. Thanks for sharing!
I love it! This gave me an idea for the kitchen concrete floor in the fixer-upper place my hubby and I purchased.
This is definitely giving me some thought on what mine might look like!
